In India, the Realme 8i was released as a successor to the Realme 7i and a less costly alternative to the Realme 8. The 120Hz display, MediaTek Helio G96 SoC, and 5,000mAh battery are the highlights of this new smartphone. The Realme 8i's beginning pricing of Rs. 13,999 is particularly intriguing since it places it in one of the most competitive niches of the market. Is the Realme 8i capable of outperforming the competition, or should you look at other options? Let's find out.

Price of the Realme 8i in India 2021
There are two versions of the Realme 8i. The base model, which comes with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage, costs Rs. 13,999 in India. while the higher model with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage costs Rs. 15,999. Space Black and Space Purple are the two color options available. For this review, I have the Space Purple top-end variant.
The design of the Realme 8i in India 2021
In comparison to its predecessor, the Realme 8i has grown marginally. It has a larger display with a hole in the top-left corner for the camera. The sides of the borders are thin, while the top and bottom are significantly thicker. The power button on the right has a fingerprint scanner, while the volume buttons are on the left. I thought the button placement was excellent because I could reach them without having to strain. On the left side of the frame is the SIM tray. The frame is flat at the top and bottom, with a 3.5mm headphone jack, primary microphone, USB Type-C connector, and loudspeaker on the bottom, while the top is blank.
The Realme 8i's body is constructed of plastic, and the back panel has an "arc beam" texture that catches the light. This panel is shiny and easily picks up fingerprints. Smudges were immediately noticeable due to the light color of my evaluation unit. The camera module protrudes slightly from the upper left corner. At first sight, this phone appears to have a quad-camera configuration, although it only has three. A flash has been placed in one of the spots.
The thickness of this phone is maintained to a minimum, measuring just 8.5mm, but the weight of 194g is significant. The Realme 8i is equipped with a 5,000mAh battery and an 18W fast charger.
Specifications of the Realme 8i in India 2021
The Realme 8i features a 6.6-inch full-HD+ LCD display with a 120Hz refresh rate. This is an improvement over the Realme 7i's 90Hz 720p panel. The Realme 8i has a dynamic refresh rate function that alternates between six preset frame rates depending on what you're doing on the phone (30Hz, 48Hz, 50Hz, 60Hz, 90Hz, 120Hz). It also offers a 180Hz touch sampling rate and 600 nits of peak brightness.
The MediaTek Helio G96 SoC powers the Realme 8i, making it the country's first smartphone to feature this processor. The base model includes 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage, while the higher-end model has 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. Realme has a function called Virtual RAM, which allows the smartphone to use some of its storage space as RAM. With the top model, you can assign up to 5GB of Virtual RAM.
The Realme 8i has a dedicated microSD card slot for expanding storage. It also includes two Nano-SIM slots, one of which supports 4G and the other VoLTE. There are also three satellite navigation systems, as well as dual-band Wi-Fi ac and Bluetooth 5.
Realme UI 2.0 is installed on top of Android 11 on the Realme 8i. The Android security patch for September was installed on my device. The phone was preloaded with a lot of bloatware, including Facebook, Snapchat, Amazon, Dailyhunt, Moj, Josh, and a few other apps. You can uninstall all of these apps, however certain Realme first-party apps remain. I did receive push notifications from the Themes and Realme Store apps while using them.
Performance of the Realme 8i
The Realme 8i did not feel slow at any point, and because of the 120Hz refresh rate, UI navigation was smooth. The tablet was able to reduce program loading times to a minimum, and multitasking was simple. On my unit, virtual RAM was enabled and set to 2GB by default, but it could be increased to 3GB or 5GB. The fingerprint scanner on the side of the phone unlocks the phone quickly. I enjoyed the Realme 8i's large display, which can get bright enough outside. Vibrant and soft color settings are available. This panel's color temperature can also be changed. I thought the speaker was loud enough. The sound sounded tinny at full volume.
On the Realme 8i, I ran our regular benchmarks to see how it compares against the competition. The Realme 8i got 337,297 points in AnTuTu, and 538 and 1,714 points in Geekbench 5's single-core and multi-core tests, respectively. It received 8,477 scores in PCMark Work 3.0. These results are marginally better than the Redmi Note 10S (Review), which I previously tested. The Realme 8i achieved 3,332 points in 3DMark Slingshot, and 55 and 12 frames per second in GFXBench's T-Rex and Car Chases tests, respectively.
I did play BGMI on the Realme 8i, and the visuals and frame rate were set to HD by default. The game was totally playable at these settings. I played for 28 minutes and observed that the battery level had dropped by 8%. After that long, the phone became slightly warm to the touch.
The Realme 8i had good battery life. With my usage, this phone may last me approximately two days. The phone lasted 21 hours and 17 minutes in our HD video loop test. This is superior to several other smartphones in this price range. Realme includes an 18W charger in the box, which can charge the battery to 30% in 30 minutes and 56% in an hour.
Cameras of the Realme 8i
While the Realme 8i appears to have a quad-camera configuration, it only has three sensors. The main sensor is a 50-megapixel Samsung sensor with an aperture of f/1.8. A 2-megapixel B&W camera and a 2-megapixel macro camera are the other two. The Realme camera app has a familiar feel to it. All of the different shooting modes are put down at the bottom of the viewfinder, making switching between them a breeze. When you enable the AI option at the top, it can identify what you're photographing and make adjustments accordingly.

The Realme 8i's 50-megapixel camera produces 12.5-megapixel images thanks to pixel binning. The images captured with the Realme 8i in daylight were average. At a distance, there was little detail in the objects. The phone also slightly sharpens photos. The Realme 8i doesn't include an ultra-wide-angle camera, but it can shoot at full 50-megapixel resolution. Photos taken at maximum resolution had more information, especially in distant subjects.
The Realme 8i produced excellent close-ups. The phone handled colors well and gave the background a lovely depth. The Realme 8i allows you to choose the level of background blur before taking a picture, so you can capture portraits with it. I thought the edge detection was good, and the subject was clear. The macro camera allows you to go extremely close to your subject and produces good images, although the resolution is restricted to 2 megapixels.
The camera's low-light performance was not the greatest I've seen in this price range. Although there was no noise in the output, it lacked detail. Darker sections of the frame were also poorly captured by the phone. The use of Night mode allowed for better acquisition of information in the shadows, as well as brighter photographs. The details were also improved, and the objects were sharper.
Selfies made with the Realme 8i in both daylight and low light were satisfactory. Though beautifying is enabled by default, portrait selfies had a decent separation between the person and the background.
For both the primary and selfie cameras, video recording is limited to 1080p. By default, the footage is not stabilized, and there are apparent vibrations. Although there is an Ultra Steady setting, it does not significantly aid in the stabilization of footage.
Verdict of the Realme 8i
The Realme 8i is launching in India's ultra-competitive sub-Rs. 15,000 sector, where it will face stiff competition. Furthermore, this isn't confined to other brands, as Realme sells a number of smartphones in this price range.
The Realme 8i's main selling point is its performance. It has a seamless user experience because of its MediaTek Helio G96 SoC and 120Hz display. The battery life is also respectable, although the 18W charger included in the box feels inadequate, especially since phones like the Realme Narzo 20 Pro (Review) come with up to 65W chargers.
The Realme 8i isn't a flawless all-arounder, and its cameras didn't live up to my expectations. You could buy this phone if the photo and video quality aren't crucial to you, but if you want something that does everything at this price point, you may choose the Realme 7, which is an earlier model but one step up in Realme's hierarchy.
