Samsung introduced its new flagship watch line, which includes the Galaxy Watch4 and Galaxy Watch 4 Classic, earlier this month. For numerous years, I've been a smartwatch collector, including Samsung Galaxy Watches and Apple Watches. Smartwatches have altered my relationship with my health. Every night, I wear a Smartwatch to track my sleep, assess my workout performance, and remind me to breathe when I'm agitated. I can honestly say that wearing a smartwatch has made me more aware of my health.

With that said, the user experience and design of a smartwatch are quite important. We obtain more performant systems with new capabilities and features with each design iteration of Samsung's Galaxy Watches. When Samsung handed me two loaner Galaxy watches to test, I couldn't wait to put the new Watch4 and Watch4 Classic through their paces. I used both of the Galaxy Watch4 systems for several days, and here are my opinions.

Design of the Samsung Galaxy Watch 4

There are two variants in the Samsung Galaxy Watch4 Series: the Watch4 and the Watch4 Classic. The Galaxy Watch4 Classic replaces the Galaxy Watch3 and the Galaxy Watch4 replaces the preceding Active2 design. Despite the fact that there are only two models, each model has a "small" and "big" variant. I say that cautiously because the sizes of the models don't appear to differ significantly. The Galaxy Watch4 is available in two sizes: 40mm and 44mm, and 42mm and 46mm for the Galaxy Watch4 Classic. The Watch4 is available in a variety of colors, including Black and Silver on the Classic and Black, Silver, Pink Gold, and Green on the Watch4. Both of my test devices were available in Black, which I liked because I prefer neutral hues.

With a more minimalistic and simple touch screen interface and two buttons, one home button, and one back button, the Watch4 replaces the Watch Active range. The Watch4 Classic has the same two buttons on the side as the Watch4 and is marked in 5-minute intervals around the bezel. It has the Galaxy Watch4 Classic's characteristic rotating bezel for accessing the watch menu, which is my favorite feature. It enables me to go swiftly between all of my apps, begin a workout in seconds, and easily check my recorded sleep time.

Both the Galaxy Watch4 and the Watch4 Classic include a comfortable 20mm silicone sport band. I was able to wear both types of watches comfortably throughout the day. I did go to the gym with both watches and lifted weights in both. In some movements, I could feel the Watch4 Classic's thicker bezel against my wrist, but it wasn't a major problem. On several times, the two tag ends on the Watch4 Classic that holds the silicone band's end slid down my wrist. To keep the watch fixed in a proper position, I had to tighten it more than I would have liked. Because the Watch4 is a little lighter, I'd prefer to use it in more athletic circumstances.

With a button-up shirt and jeans, or anything more formal than shorts and a t-shirt, the Watch4 Classic would be my go-to.

The Watch4 Series' 1.4" AMOLED screens are crisp. The display has a variety of brightness levels and is quite responsive and precise when it comes to touch. Samsung has recently excelled at making high-quality panels for its smartphones, and the Galaxy Watch4 appears to profit from that expertise.

The user experience of the Samsung Galaxy Watch 4

My first chore after taking the Galaxy Watch4 out of the package was to turn it on and sync it with my Galaxy Flip3 5G. In the Galaxy Wearables app, I upgraded my software version as normal. After that, I went to the Google Play Store and downloaded a couple of other apps, including Samsung Health and SmartThings. The updated Wear OS is one of the biggest enhancements to the new Galaxy Watch4. Google and Samsung collaborated to produce the most recent version of the software in order to create a better watch operating system. You can anticipate a comparable appearance and feel from your smartphone to your watch with Samsung One UI Watch.

One example is that if you download a watch-compatible app on your smartphone, it will automatically install on your Watch 4.

Samsung Health is by far my most utilized app. It allows me to keep track of my calorie burn, food intake, active calories, steps, sleep, activity heart rate, stress, and other activities. I liked waking up and evaluating my REM, light, and deep sleep, as well as how much time I spent up during the night. The fact that the watch will create a sleep score based on data acquired the night before was appealing to me. The Watch4 can also detect snoring throughout the night, though it didn't pick up any noises from me this time.

On the workout front, I utilized the Watch4 devices to track a weightlifting session and various walks during the week. The Watch4 can track over 90 different sport modes, so there's certainly something for everyone.

The new body composition measurement tool is a great addition to the health features. You may measure your skeletal muscle, fat mass, basal metabolic rate, body water, and body fat by placing two fingers over the two exterior buttons. I tried it out and was able to read it in a matter of seconds. I'm not sure how precise this method is in comparison to a medical scan, but it's still useful.

It was mostly flawless whether I used the watch for other tasks like switching music on Spotify, sending a text message by speech, or just as a standard watch. I used my phone frequently to handle app permissions that I couldn't change on the watch. Most of those issues should go away with use, but it was inconvenient in any case. There was also some lag between Google maps and my phone screen when I triggered a trip on my watch and it took more than 10 seconds for it to appear on my phone screen.

Specs of the Samsung Galaxy Watch 4

My Galaxy Watch4 devices both came with 1.4 GHz processors "1.5GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage, and a dual-core "5nm" processor are all included. Samsung Knox security is also built into each model. The smaller Watch4 models use the same hardware as the larger models, but with 1.2 GHz processors "instead of displays The entire experience is powered by Samsung's Wear OS, which was created in collaboration with Google. It was disappointing to hear that Wear OS 3 devices could not be paired with iPhones. However, I don't know many iPhone users who would buy a Galaxy Watch.

Armor Aluminum is used for the exterior case, which goes well with the Sport Band strap. The Watch4 is 30.3 grams while the Watch4 classic is 52 grams. I understand that gram is a difficult measure to convey to an end-user, but the Watch4 Classic is substantially heavier than the Watch4. Despite the numerous sizing and connection options, I believe Samsung's strategy is to cover all bases with a watch that suits everyone's needs. For a price, each Galaxy Watch4 can support LTE, which is offered via AT&T and Verizon.

A 361mAh battery powers the larger watches, while a 247mAh battery powers the smaller ones. The Samsung BioActive Sensor, which contains an optical heart rate sensor, an electrical heart sensor, and a bioelectrical impedance analysis sensor, is one of the Watch4's most striking features. As you can see, the health sensors Samsung included in the Watch4 are quite complicated. Accelerometer, barometer, gyro sensor, geomagnetic sensor, and light sensor are some of the additional sensors. Many of these sensors are similar to those found in other smartwatches. A wireless USB charger and a quick start guide are also included in the box.

Battery life of the Samsung Galaxy Watch 4

My Watch4 devices were both the larger ones with the larger 361mAh battery. I can't speak to the difference in battery life between the larger 361mAh models and the slightly smaller 247mAh models, but I imagine similar battery life assuming Samsung used the same battery life to display size ratios. Each Galaxy Watch4 model is expected to last roughly 40 hours, according to Samsung.

On any given day, I was using my Galaxy Watch4 to track my sleep, stress, and workouts. I also used it a lot to check whether it was working and as a backup navigation system. I didn't take it easy on the system because I enabled the always-on display, heart rate, stress logging, and auto-brightness. On a single charge, I was getting roughly 30 hours of battery life. I'm sure I could get a few more hours of battery life by turning off some of my health tracking apps or lowering the brightness of my display, but I'd rather have a better experience than a few more hours of battery life. Despite the fact that the battery life fell short of Samsung's expectations, I was able to get over 30 hours of use time in a real-world scenario.

Pricing of the Samsung Galaxy Watch 4

The new Samsung Galaxy Watch4 is priced from $249.99 to $299.99, depending on size and LTE connectivity. The Galaxy Watch 4 Classic, which starts at $349.99 and goes up to $399.99 depending on size and LTE connectivity, is also available now. Given the current competitive price in the Smartwatch market, I believe Samsung's pricing structure is right on.

Verdict of the Samsung Galaxy Watch 4

After extensive use of both the Galaxy Watch4 and the Galaxy Watch 4 Classic, I believe Samsung has done an excellent job with its two flagship watches, especially from the perspective of an Android user. I like how Samsung prioritized premium design, health and wellness features, high-performance hardware, and a variety of design options to cater to a wide range of customer tastes.

The looks aren't ideal, but because of a combined software and hardware effort, the user experience in the domain of Smart Watches is top-notch. Hopefully, Google and Samsung will continue to work together to improve the user experience with Wear OS 3 in the future, which I believe they will because Google has a wealth of developer resources at its disposal. The Galaxy Watch4 could become a permanent fixture on my wrist if Samsung can keep improving its hardware and software with each design revision. My daily wearable is the Apple Watch, and if I were to switch completely, I'd have to keep wearing the Galaxy Watch4. I'd switch if Samsung could get the blood pressure monitoring to function.
