Although Xiaomi and its Redmi sub-brand cover a large portion of the budget and mid-range television market in India, the company's primary focus will always be on value for money, which includes the high end. The Mi TV line is characterized by huge screens, a wealth of functionality, smart software, and a minimalist style. The Mi TV 5X, the company's latest television series, aims to continue this trend without sacrificing the one thing that has drawn customers to the brand in the first place: competitive and reasonable cost.
The Xiaomi Mi TV 5X 55-inch Ultra-HD LED Smart TV, which costs Rs. 45,999 in India, looks great on paper, and offers capable performance without requiring you to spend a lot of money. Support for Dolby Vision, hands-free Google Assistant voice controls, and the combination of Android TV 10 with the company's famed PatchWall UI are just a few of the highlights. Design and features of the Xiaomi Mi TV 5X 55
Until far, televisions under Xiaomi's Mi brand have included the Mi logo, but the Mi TV 5X marks a significant departure. The company has announced that it will change its brand name to 'Xiaomi' on future products, and the Mi TV 5X exemplifies this, even if it is still referred to as a 'Mi TV.'
The new Xiaomi logo is clearly displayed on a silver strip just below the screen, just above the module with a few indicator lights and the power button. The rest of the screen's borders are much smaller and silver in color, giving the Mi TV 5X a distinct design that sets it apart from the competition as well as other Xiaomi televisions like the Redmi TV X Series and Mi TV 4X series.
The Mi TV 5X isn't quite as thin as some of the flagship TVs I've recently evaluated, but it's well built and not overly thick, especially at the bottom, where it bulges slightly. Whether mounted on the wall or on stand mounts, it looks nice for a TV in its price range. With one set of inputs and ports facing downwards and a second set facing to the left of the screen, the lower half of the rear of the TV has a carbon-fiber-like texture.
The Ethernet, optical audio out, composite AV input, and antenna port are all located on the left, while the two USB ports, three HDMI 2.1 ports, and 3.5mm audio out socket are located on the right. The television may be stand-mounted with the provided aluminum stands or wall-mounted with any VESA-compatible aftermarket kit. At the time of installation, Xiaomi can provide a wall-mount kit for an additional fee.
While I'm reviewing the 55-inch Mi TV 5X model, which costs Rs. 45,999, you can also get the 50-inch and 43-inch variants for Rs. 41,999 and Rs. 31,999, respectively, in India. All three are Ultra-HD televisions that offer HDR up to Dolby Vision.
The Mi TV 5X 55 has a 55-inch LED-backlit Ultra-HD (3840x2160-pixel) screen with Dolby Vision and HDR10+ high dynamic range capabilities.
The two-speaker system on this television has a rated sound output of 40W and supports Dolby Atmos and DTS-HD. One of the HDMI connections supports HDMI ARC, and there's dual-band Wi-Fi ac and Bluetooth 5 for connectivity. The TV features a quad-core processor, 2GB of RAM, and 16GB of app and data storage.
Remote control and features for Xiaomi Mi TV 5X 55
While Xiaomi's televisions have evolved in terms of appearance and branding over the months and years, the company's approach to the remote has remained relatively consistent. The Mi TV 5X comes with Xiaomi's recognizable, simple control, however, the required AAA batteries are not included in the sales package, which is disappointing.
I'm used to the remote, and the company's software modifications, such as Quick Mute and Quick Settings access, have long since compensated for its physical flaws. It's well-equipped to move you around the TV's software quickly, and you'll have no trouble navigating both the Stock Android TV UI and Xiaomi's proprietary PatchWall UI.

Hands-free Google Assistant access, Google Chromecast built-in with support for Ultra-HD and HDR casting from supported apps and services, and auto low-latency mode for use with gaming consoles, and the option to use Alexa as your default voice assistant are just a few of the other highlights of the Mi TV 5X.
The microphone on the television may be switched to always-on mode to listen for the wake phrases 'OK Google' or 'Hey Google,' exactly like on a smart speaker like the Google Nest Audio. If you have privacy concerns or simply don't want to utilize voice commands, you may turn off the microphone using a physical sliding switch located at the bottom of the TV, just below the Xiaomi logo.
Software and user interface for Xiaomi Mi TV 5X 55
Anyone who has used a Xiaomi television before will be familiar with the software experience on the Xiaomi Mi TV 5X, just like the remote. The TV is powered by Android TV 10 and comes with both the stock Android TV user interface and Xiaomi's customized PatchWall 4 launcher. All major apps are supported, and users can download any of the over 5,000 apps available on the Google Play Store for Android TV.
Users of other Android TV devices will be familiar with the stock Android TV UI, which operates without any manufacturer-imposed limits. By long-pressing the Mi button on the remote from anywhere in the interface, including when content is playing, you can access the settings. A simple click of the button launches the PatchWall launcher, which displays handpicked content from a variety of streaming sources.
Performance of Xiaomi Mi TV 5X 55
Aside from its good appearance and features, the Xiaomi Mi TV 5X 55 is also well suited to provide a comfortable viewing experience, thanks to its value focus. For a 55-inch television under Rs. 50,000, picture and sound quality are excellent, offering the impact of a large screen TV while also performing well across resolutions and content kinds. However, I did see some lag and UI performance concerns, which I'll discuss further in this section.
The Mi TV 5X 55 is a high-dynamic-range (HDR) television that can display HDR10+ and Dolby Vision content. Naturally, with a 55-inch screen, this TV is best suited for high-definition material, such as Dolby Vision movies and TV series on Netflix and Disney+ Hotstar, which looked far superior to anything else I saw.
The Mi TV 5X made watching Korean hit TV show Squid Game in Ultra-HD and Dolby Vision on Netflix a pleasurable experience. The image had a pleasant, easy-going tone to it, with colors that weren't nearly as vibrant as those on more expensive TVs, but was nevertheless sophisticated and striking. The vivid pinks and greens of the guards' and contestants' clothing were softly but powerfully brought out by the television.
The image is crisp and detailed without being overly shocking or harsh. Ultra-HD content had a smoothness to it, with Dolby Vision content looking even better in terms of brightness and contrast. On the Mi TV 5X, visually spectacular shows like Our Planet, as well as gentler and less impacting entertainment like Clarkson's Farm on Amazon Prime Video, looked great.
While there was a considerable gain in brightness, as well as the ability to have varying levels of contrast and impact in the same frame with HDR material, Dolby Vision's main advantage on the Mi TV 5X was the tone. The serious, dark vibe of shows like Squid Game and movies like Greyhound on Apple TV+ was portrayed beautifully by this set, while the lighthearted Somebody Feed Phil looked bright and cheerful as Phil Rosenthal visited cities and their unique eateries.
When it comes to dark levels, many LED-backlit TVs, especially those under Rs. 50,000, have a tendency to choke. While not as good as televisions like the OnePlus TV Q1 Pro (which features local dimming), the Mi TV 5X does a decent job with darker situations and black tones. The screen had a light grey wash, but it wasn't as noticeable or annoying as the Redmi TV X55, which costs approximately Rs. 5,000 less than the Mi TV 5X. As a result, dark episodes looked good in dimly lit areas, while bright sequences were watchable even when sunshine hit the TV.

Normal dynamic range and standard definition video, while not as appealing to view as HDR, performed admirably on the Mi TV 5X 55. The Last Dance on Netflix, as well as another full-HD programmings like The Good Place, Parks and Recreation, and Schumacher, were all enjoyable to watch, with the TV handling the older, upscaled footage of the Bulls' historic championship runs and Michael Schumacher's F1 dominance in the 1990s especially well. Across resolutions and material, this TV provided a consistently bright, clear, and clean viewing experience.
In normal viewing settings, the Mi TV 5X's sound is comfortable and decent; thanks to its 40W speakers, the TV can get rather loud. The sound is well-balanced and consistent, with few unpleasant volume spikes. Surprisingly, while Dolby Atmos is available on the TV and can be engaged with a slider switch in the sound settings menu, video platforms like Netflix and Disney+ Hotstar only offer 5.1-channel audio at best.
Enabling Dolby Atmos on this TV, on the other hand, appears to upscale the sound output at the hardware level. With most content, this made a minor impact on sound quality. While watching Squid Game, certain virtualized surround effects could be heard, and the sound overall felt more precise and detailed. The sound was adequate even with this turned off or with stuff that didn't really benefit from the format. However, a good speaker system, such as the Sony HT-S40R, which I examined alongside this TV, could enhance the listening experience.
Although the picture and sound quality were typically good, and the software experience was mostly satisfactory, the Mi TV 5X did have some performance issues. When streaming Ultra-HD content, there was some lag and stutter in the picture, as well as delayed answers to button-press commands from the remote and a few Wi-Fi connection failures.
In several cases, I also noticed subtitle timing delays, with the words appearing on screen a second or two late but clearing on time, making it difficult to read along when watching foreign-language content. While these issues were minor and could usually be resolved by turning the TV off and on, they did occur from time to time and are worth mentioning.
Verdict for Xiaomi Mi TV 5X 55
Xiaomi's commitment to value for money and competitive pricing is paying dividends, and the Mi TV 5X is a solid illustration of why low-cost televisions are worth considering. With a price tag of Rs. 45,999, this is easily my favorite 55-inch television under Rs. 50,000 right now. It has a solid balance of design, functionality, and performance, and it makes very few mistakes. Above all, it delivers exactly what you'd expect from television at this price point.
While the Mi TV 5X delivered on most fronts, I did encounter some performance issues that hampered the entire experience. However, in the grand scheme of things, these were minor flaws, and the Xiaomi Mi TV 5X 55 is a wonderful choice for the good all-around experience it provides and its low price.
