If you travel frequently, you understand the importance of noise-canceling headphones. The effects of 90 decibels for six hours on your eardrums, brain, and stress level are significant. Bose was the only brand worth considering for ten years. I know this because every few years, I'd pick up 15 or 20 sets of headphones and compare them on cross-country trips.

Best Wireless Noise Canceling Headphone Review 2022

That's why I was taken aback when my cameraman pal Mike told me on a recent TV shot that there was finally something better. He recommended that I try the Sony WH-1000X M3 headphones, which were released in late summer. The pricing is $348, which is the same as the Bose QuietComfort 35 II. Both headphones can link to your phone via Bluetooth or to the plane's seat-back screen via a cable. Both have built-in Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant.

With pillowy ear-cup cushioning and just the proper amount of head-grip, both the Bose and the Sony are extremely comfortable and lightweight. And they both do an amazing job at noise suppression. (NC circuitry is better for removing steady noise, such as that produced by plane engines and air conditioners.) The excellent over-the-ear seal against your skull is essentially responsible for any noise dampening.)

But there are six reasons why I fell in love with the Sony WH-1000X M3:

1. A trackpad is located in the right ear cup. Swipe up or down to control the level, left or right to change songs, and double-tap to pause or play your music or movie.

2. You don't have to take the Sonys out when someone is attempting to chat with you. Simply lay your hand on the right earpiece to allow sound from the outer world to reach you. Brilliant.

3. The Sonys features a 30-hour battery life on a single charge. The Bose model has 20-hour battery life.

4. The Sonys are charged using USB-C. In practice, this just means that they receive a quick initial charge. They acquire enough juice for a five-hour journey in ten minutes. That's a great tool to have when you're on your way to JFK and discover you forgot to charge your devices.

5. The Sonys have a superior sound. The bass is deeper and more powerful, the middle is well-balanced, and the highs are clear.

6. The Sonys use a standard 3.5-mm headphone wire that is simple to replace and inexpensive. A special order is required for the Bose model, which requires a cord with an uncommon 2.5-mm plug.

I do wish that, like the QuietComfort, the Sonys could be attached to two devices at once, such as a phone and a laptop, but in almost every other manner, the Sony WH-1000X M3s are the best NC headphones ever manufactured, and I always have a brand new pair in my carry-on.
